Apprentice Grower & Farm Assistant
Apprenticeship – Fulltime Position
The role will suit someone who is interested in gaining experience in growing veg on a market garden scale but also setting up a farm & smallholding. Weekly tasks include propagating, planting & maintaining organic vegetable plants. Harvesting, packing & selling produce including veg deliveries. Plus building a smallholding & new farm enterprise going into its 3rd year.
The right candidate will be full time with one day spent at Plumpton College getting a horticulture qualification during term time.
Fanfield Farm are looking for an Assistant Grower and Farm Assistant as part of an apprenticeship scheme for a 35 hours a week role.
The position would suit someone who is interested in gaining experience in organic growing but also setting up an market garden style farm and smallholding. Weeks will be filled with tasks such as propagating, planting, maintaining organic vegetable plants. Harvesting, packing and selling produce including regular veg box deliveries. Building up a smallholding and new farm enterprise that is going into its third year, this may include building structures, setting up new systems and working with animals too.
The right candidate would be open to working outside all year round, love nature, be interested in managing an agroecological farm and interested in how small farms operate. As well as be prepared for labour intensive days.
We believe the position is a great offering as not only will the candidate learn the real world of organic farming and growing, but also be actively involved in the building up of a small farm and smallholding, providing practical knowledge and hands-on skills ranging between building outbuildings, to maintaining on site equipment, planting fruit orchards, and building soil health.
Interest in the operational business side could also be an advantage, we also run marketing companies and are happy to teach these skills to potential applicants including marketing, social media and how our operations / sales work.
We are passionate about growing in the right way, and are looking for someone to help us continue that reality and expand into 2022 and beyond whilst sharing our knowledge. It is possible that the position could lead into a full time role for the right candidate.
- Helping and assisting in growing vegetable crops and plants on the farm.
- Asissting in the harveting and preparing of veg for customers.
- Helping to run the farm and maintain the different areas of the farm.
- To keep growing areas free of weeds and prepare new growing spaces.
- To assist with crop planning and rotation.
- And more, all training will be given.
- A desire to work outside and learn about regenerative growing.
- Be interested in different ways of working land, and be prepared for manual work.
- Driving License is preferable but not essential.
Due to the nature of the community aspect of the farm we work with schools and community groups, therefore the successful applicant will be required to complete a DBS check which means Fanfield Farm as an employer will be able to check the criminal record of successful applicants.
- We are looking for a hardworking and trustworthy professional.
- Someone who is happy to work outside in all weathers.
- Driving License is preferable but not essential.
- Someone who is interested in learning, and applying that learning on a daily basis.

2 Years+ (Dependent on enrolment of college course).
Potential for further roles:
Yes, the position will develop into a full time role after the course for the right candidate.
Variable depending on season, mainly Monday – Friday but may require occasional Saturdays with notice.

Paid For Qualification
Through taking this apprenticeship you will attent Plumpton College for two years and will complete the Horticulture & Landscape Operative Level 2 Course.
You will receive the apprenticeship course certificate, Level 3 Award in First Aid, Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Level 1 Maths / English (if applicable).
