Job Description

Fanfield Farm are looking for an Assistant Grower & Farm Assistant to work 21 hours per week at our small scale farm in Polegate, East Sussex.

The position would suit someone who is interested in gaining experience in organic growing or setting up a market garden style farm. Weekly tasks will include: propagating, planting and maintaining organic vegetable plants. Harvesting, packing and selling produce including the delivery of our veg boxes each week. Plus building a smallholding that is going into it’s 3rd year as a new farm enterprise.

The right candidate would be open to working outside all year round, love nature, be interested in managing an agroecological farm and interested in how small farms operate. As well as be prepared for labour intensive days.

The successful candidate will work Tuesday – Thursday each week totalling 21 hours per week. A normal week “in-season” (May – December) would look like:

Tuesday: Plant and crop maintenance / general farm work

Wednesday: Helping to run volunteer days where we get as much farm work done as possible with the help of external volunteers.

Thursday: Harvest and packing boxes early morning, followed by the successful candidate delivering those boxes for the afternoon.

In the “off-season” the week will be more flexible with Tuesday to Thursdays tasks including upkeep of the farm and preparing the farm for the following growing season.

We believe the position is a great offering as not only will the candidate learn the real world of organic farming and growing, but also be actively involved in the building up of a small farm and smallholding, providing practical knowledge and hands-on skills ranging between building outbuildings, to maintaining on site equipment, planting fruit orchards, and building soil health.

Interest in the operational business side could also be an advantage, we also run marketing companies and are happy to teach these skills to potential applicants including marketing, social media and how our operations / sales work.

We are passionate about growing in the right way, and are looking for someone to help us continue that reality and expand into 2022 and beyond whilst sharing our knowledge.
